Gulf research hits the news

Gulf research hits the news

In July – ahead of the busiest day on UK roads – we conducted some research into summer driving habits, to determine what people really get up to and talk about on their long holiday drives.

We involved 1,000 UK drivers who had driven, or were considering driving, to a holiday destination in the UK or abroad within the last 12 or next 12 months. Fieldwork was carried out between 6th–9th July 2026 by 3Gem on behalf of Gulf.

A widespread audience

With results covering everything from journey distances to car confessions, the research attracted a huge range of news outlets. A total of 17 picked up the story – culminating in an estimated audience of 7.02million and 50k views on social media. All this means the Gulf brand has reached new audiences, all across the UK, who may just stop by your forecourt as a result…

Nationwide coverage

From local outlets like the Scottish Local Retailer Magazine and the Yorkshire Evening Post to trade magazines like Forecourt Trader and the Retail Times, coverage was widespread – and so were the headlines. Some picked up on the problem-solving nature of road trips to grab attention, while others kept a firm focus on service station facilities.

Marketing support behind the Gulf name

But what does this research mean for retailers? Well, the Gulf name is out there, far and wide, right at the centre of the conversation around the busiest season on the roads. And with service stations being such a key part of the research, it’s a chance to get real access into what actually matters to drivers when it comes to making a stop en route.

Clean toilets were rated a top priority by 63% of drivers, service stations that offer a good range of food and drink came in second with 49%, and good parking options ranked third (42%). A full range of fuels, customer service, family facilities and EV charging were among the other facilities drivers also appreciated most.

What’s next?

This research is just one example of the activities we do at Gulf to build awareness and support retailers. Through investment like this, we show our dedication to partnering with forecourt owners to offer marketing support that helps you stand out from the crowd.
